This Week in Reading: More Books For the TBR

Well, I didn’t get a whole lot of reading in last week, whoops! Not sure why, things started off well. But then I just lost motivation somewhere.

Well, I also got distracted watching a Kdrama–the drama adaptation of the webtoon True Beauty. That was interesting because it’s the first one I’ve watched where I’ve actually read the webtoon first! I have to say, I like the show but there are definitely some aspects of the webtoon that I missed seeing and I’m really hoping for a season 2 so that we get to see some of that. Admittedly, it’s a really long webtoon (and still running!) so it would be hard to cover everything in 16 episodes.

Anywho. Here are some new books that have arrived in the last couple of weeks, sharing here since I haven’t done a Sunday Post in a bit.

The first two pics are of the LitJoy Crate special edition box set of Strange the Dreamer and Muse of Nightmares by Laini Taylor. They’re gorgeous! Next up, the trade paperback edition of Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia came out so I picked that up and of course I had to get The Witness For the Dead by Katherine Addison. I also went by my local library for the first time since covid locked everything down last year and picked up a couple of books there–two novellas, a story collection and the first of an urban fantasy series that struck my fancy. No idea when I’ll get the time to read all of these…lol. As ever I am overambitious.

Anyway, as I said I’ve been feeling unmotivated this past week and also just lacking on time. I did chop my hair off though so maybe that will free me up a bit and make some of the bad feelings go away haha. (Went from having it halfway down my back to right at my shoulders so I lost a good 12 inches at least.) I also went to the baseball game with my friend on Tuesday night-it was Pride night at the stadium so even though it was a loss for the O’s I felt like it was a win to see so many rainbows out there in celebration. And yesterday I spent almost the entire day babysitting an 11 year old while my best friend went to a family wedding. Which was good! But no time for books.

As far as reading though…I managed to finish a single book–The Fire’s Stone by Tanya Huff. This was a pretty generic fantasy world and the plot was even more generic but I feel like the characters and their interactions really made the story shine. Also it had queer characters so I have continued my streak of unintentionally reading lots of queer books during Pride month lol.

Wow, this looks like last week! Hahahahaha. I’m about halfway through Gods of Jade and Shadow and really loving it! I just need more time in a day it seems. Hopefully will finish this up shortly. And I still have done ZERO audiobook reading the past week so I still have The Name of All Things by Jenn Lyons to finish up. Once again, really enjoying it, just can’t seem to find the motivation to listen to books when my commute is so short and there hasn’t been much listening time at home. Womp womp. So hopefully I can get through these this week–but we’ll see!

What are you reading this week? Leave a note in the comments, I’d love to chat!

Well, it sounds like you had a great week and sometimes that involves other things taking over or being given priority. I think you should continue to stay off plan and read what you like when you like.
    Lynn 😀

That’s absolutely true! Sometimes there’s just not enough time in a day to do everything you both need and want to do lol.
Thanks, Lynn! That’s the plan for now–no plans.

I finally started The Hallowed Hunt by Bujold last night! I’ve really been wanting to read the Penric novellas, but I had a bit of a mental block about starting those when I hadn’t finished off the original novels yet. I’m really enjoying it so far!

Oh I think that wound up being my favorite of the original trilogy even though a lot of other people love the first one better lol. Hope you enjoy! I also want to get to the novellas at some point, I’ve heard great things about them.

It looks like you managed to get lots of fantastic sff books! I haven’t read Silvia’s yet, but definitely want to! I completely understand about losing motivation to read. For me I found that embracing the slump and doing other things really brings me back more energized (which is what happened recently). Wonderful post! 😁✨

I have somehow been steadily getting more and more books! (Somehow–i keep ordering them haha)
I’m really enjoying Gods of Jade and Shadow so far. Hope you get to check out her stuff eventually. 🙂
Embracing the slump, that’s a good way to approach it! Have a great week!

Congrats on the big hair change! I cut my hair a solid foot a few years back, and I’ve never been able to go back since. I love having short hair; it’s so fun and freeing! Those editions of Strange the Dreamer look wonderful. I keep mooning over them, but I really love the original covers and can’t convince myself to buy a second copy.

I’m challenging myself to read an 870-page Shadowhunters book before Friday, which is–a lot, haha. I’m going away on Friday and didn’t want to bring it, and I could have just picked a shorter book for this week, but alas, I, too, am overambitious.

    • waytoofantasy says:

Thanks! I go back and forth between short and long. I do like short because it’s easier to care for but it also requires cutting more often to maintain haha. I’m essentially guided by my laziness when it comes to my hair.

I like the original covers too! I think I mostly bought these because it was an excuse to get physical copies and also treat myself at the same time. 😀

Oh wow. That’s a tome! I think you can do it though, those books sound like they probably read quick. Hope you enjoy!

The first book is one of my all time favorites! From what I understand this is more like a side spin off than a direct sequel. But I’m still excited for it!

Huff I had first encountered more than 20 years ago in my college library but I’ve only recently started going through her catalogue over the last few years–I’m really enjoying pretty much everything I read by her.
