TBR Shelf Cleanup #40

Time for another round up of books from my TBR to go through! Each week I’ll be going over a selection from my physical unread books and deciding what to keep and what to purge. There will be a third option–undecided–which I might ask for your input on why you think I should keep or purge that title from my list. You can also check out my full TBR pile here.

Range of Ghosts by Elizabeth Bear

range of ghostsTemur, grandson of the Great Khan, is walking away from a battlefield where he was left for dead. All around lie the fallen armies of his cousin and his brother, who made war to rule the Khaganate. Temur is now the legitimate heir by blood to his grandfather’s throne, but he is not the strongest. Going into exile is the only way to survive his ruthless cousin.

Once-Princess Samarkar is climbing the thousand steps of the Citadel of the Wizards of Tsarepheth. She was heir to the Rasan Empire until her father got a son on a new wife. Then she was sent to be the wife of a Prince in Song, but that marriage ended in battle and blood. Now she has renounced her worldly power to seek the magical power of the wizards.

These two will come together to stand against the hidden cult that has so carefully brought all the empires of the Celadon Highway to strife and civil war through guile and deceit and sorcerous power.

Definitely want to check this one out, and I haven’t had it in my TBR for too long… relatively speaking hahahaha. *sweatdrop*  KEEP

Dreams Underfoot by Charles de Lint

dreams underfootWelcome to Newford…

Welcome to the music clubs, the waterfront, the alleyways where ancient myths and magic spill into the modern world. Come meet Jilly, painting wonders in the rough city streets; and Geordie, playing fiddle while he dreams of a ghost; and the Angel of Grasso Street gathering the fey and the wild and the poor and the lost. Gemmins live in abandoned cars and skells traverse the tunnels below, while mermaids swim in the grey harbor waters and fill the cold night with their song.

I have this one and two other Newford books that are currently unread (and one that is read and I loved it). I love de Lint’s writing even though I haven’t read much of it and I intend to read more. KEEP

Fool’s Run by Patricia A. McKillip

Fool's RunSeven years ago, Terra Viridian obeyed a vision and killed 1,500 innocent people. She was sentenced to the Underworld prison. Now, a new age band, led by a psychic pianist and a masked woman called the Queen of Hearts, arrives at the prison to perform. And Terra’s vision is moving closer, changing all their lives forever.

.

Well of course this is McKillip so it’s staying in the pile. This is actually a science fiction or science fantasy? And one of the rare books of hers with a not so wonderful cover haha. KEEP

Parable of the Sower by Octavia E. Butler

Parable of the SowerIn 2025, with the world descending into madness and anarchy, one woman begins a fateful journey toward a better future.

Lauren Olamina and her family live in one of the only safe neighborhoods remaining on the outskirts of Los Angeles. Behind the walls of their defended enclave, Lauren’s father, a preacher, and a handful of other citizens try to salvage what remains of a culture that has been destroyed by drugs, disease, war, and chronic water shortages. While her father tries to lead people on the righteous path, Lauren struggles with hyperempathy, a condition that makes her extraordinarily sensitive to the pain of others.

When fire destroys their compound, Lauren’s family is killed and she is forced out into a world that is fraught with danger. With a handful of other refugees, Lauren must make her way north to safety, along the way conceiving a revolutionary idea that may mean salvation for all mankind.

I have all of these in ebook so I don’t need to hang onto the ratty paperback I have, yay? I also really want to read this because I want to read more Butler. PURGE

Ruled Britannia by Harry Turtledove

Ruled BritanniaThe year is 1597. For nearly a decade, the island of Britain has been under the rule of King Philip in the name of Spain. The citizenry live under an enforced curfew—and in fear of the Inquisition’s agents, who put heretics to the torch in public displays. And with Queen Elizabeth imprisoned in the Tower of London, the British have no symbol to unite them against the enemy who occupies their land.

William Shakespeare has no interest in politics. His passion is writing for the theatre, where his words bring laughter and tears to a populace afraid to speak out against the tyranny of the Spanish crown. But now Shakespeare is given an opportunity to pen his greatest work—a drama that will incite the people of Britain to rise against their persecutors—and change the course of history.

Once again, I’m not really sure why I have this. It must have been in a free pile of books somewhere. I do, once in a while, enjoy an alt-history, but I really don’t think I have much interest in this one. PURGE

That’s all for now! This brings my total count to:

Keep Purge Undecided
268 93 43

More purges and one more undecided. Things are moving in the right direction! What do you think about my choices here? Anything you’d do differently? Leave a note in the comments, I’d love to chat!

I’ve struggled with Butler but aren’t ready to give up on her stuff quite yet. Turtledove can be a fun author when it’s the right book and I’m in the right mood – I still want to read his Darkness Series (WWII inspired epic fantasy with dragons), and his Worldwar series (aliens invade during WWII) sounds like fun too.

I’ve read two Butler books–Kindred (which I LOVED) and then Fledgling, which was really….meh for me. I thought it was interesting but there were some things about it that I just couldn’t get past haha. 🙂

I’ve heard good things about Turtledove, although I think his work might not be in my wheelhouse.

I have the graphic novel for Butler’s book and I still haven’t read it yet but I’m looking forward to giving it a try. I’m afraid it might go over my head but I do have a few of her books on my TBR! All the books you’ve kept look really intriguing as well! Hope you enjoy them 😉
