TBR Shelf Cleanup #8

Time for another round up of books from my TBR to go through! Each week I’ll be going over a selection from my physical unread books and deciding what to keep and what to purge. There will be a third option–undecided–which I might ask for your input on why you think I should keep or purge that title from my list. You can also check out my full TBR pile here.

Altered Seasons: Monsoonrise by Paul Briggs

I have NO IDEA what this book is, I think my husband might have bought it in the dealer’s room at Balticon and snuck it into my collection. (He’s not a huge reader and sometimes he buys books thinking I’ll read them and then tell him about them? I don’t know.)  Anywho. There’s not even a description for this on goodreads. It sounds like apocalyptic climate fic? I have no idea. It’s possible that it might be good but I’m not interested in reading it so it will be purged. PURGE

Moonheart by Charles de Lint

mh-coverWhen Sara and Jamie discovered the seemingly ordinary artifacts, they sensed the pull of a dim and distant place. A world of mists and forests, of ancient magics, mythical beings, ageless bards…and restless evil.

Now, with their friends and enemies alike–Blue, the biker; Keiran, the folk musician; the Inspector from the RCMP; and the mysterious Tom Hengyr–Sara and Jamie are drawn into this enchanted land through the portals of Tamson House, that sprawling downtown edifice that straddles two worlds.

Sweeping from ancient Wales to the streets of Ottawa today, Moonheart will entrance you with its tale of this world and the other one at the very edge of sight…and the unforgettable people caught up in the affairs of both. A tale of music, and motorcycles, and fey folk beyond the shadows of the moon. A tale of true magic; the tale of Moonheart.

I haven’t read much by Charles de Lint but I’ve collected quite a lot and what I have read I’ve LOVED so I’m looking forward to reading more of his work. This one definitely stays in the pile. KEEP

The First Chronicles of Druss the Legend by David Gemmel

fcodtl-coverHe was known as Druss. The Deathwalker. Though the blood of merciless butchers coursed through his veins, he had found a fragile peace through his love for beautiful, mystical Rowena. Then came the day when Druss returned to their village and found everyone dead–massacred by slavers who had stolen the women to sell for gold. Rowena was among the missing.

Armed with only his powerful double-bladed ax, Snaga, Druss went after Rowena. His journey would carry him from the highest thrones of power to the deepest dungeons of depravity. Along the way, he would battle savage monsters and descend into terrifying lands of black magic and demons.

Yet one thing was certain. Druss would have victory . . . or death.

At one point several years ago I added a bunch of Gemmell to my TBR. But I find I’m not overly interested in this type of fantasy right now. Plus, this is a sequel to Legend and I don’t have the first book for whatever reason. So for now I’ll let this one go from my pile. PURGE

Shadowmarch by Tad Williams

sm-cover

The maze-like castle of Southmarch stands sentry along the border between the human kingdoms and the land of the immortal Qua. Now, the darkness from beyond that border has begun to enfold Southmarch – or Shadowmarch – the Qua’s ancient home. To stop the darkness falling, the Southmarch royal family must face their human enemies, supposed friends and the family curse. Twins Barrick and Briony shoulder impossible burdens as their father is imprisoned and their brother murdered. Briony flees towards her father and the slave armies of the Autarch, while her brother Barrick crosses the Shadowline gripped by madness ..

So, I have this one and one sequel to it in my pile. I got these as part of the giant haul from my friend’s comic shop. I don’t know why I thought I wanted these? The covers? Just because I’ve heard good things about Tad Williams around the forums? I have no idea. But I don’t think I’m ever going to get around to these, realistically. – PURGE

The Outlaws of Sherwood by Robin McKinley

toos-cover

The classic tale of Robin Hood gets a new lift as real flesh-and-blood outlaws, on the lam from the gallows and the sword, fight for the sake of justice. Robin and his merry cohorts swing through the forest in these fresh additions to the timeless stories.

Robin McKinley is one of my favorite authors but I still have a bunch of books by her in my TBR that I need to read. I think I keep saving them so that I still have things to read. Maybe that’s just what I tell myself so I don’t feel bad about not having gotten to them yet. Hah. Anyway, definitely holding onto this one. KEEP

So, letting a couple of more go this week. Progress is progress I guess. My running total so far is:

Keep Purge Undecided
57 19 11

At least I feel pretty strongly about my picks this week. Any thoughts on these? Leave a note in the comments, I’d love to chat!

I read a Tad Williams book years ago and loved it, but then tried another and didn’t love it. So I’m on the fence with him. Best to purge!

  2. dragonsandzombies says:

I would throw the Tad Williams as well! Never liked his books. And Gemmell… I read one of his books and thought it was alright. But didn’t need anymore^^ It was very fight heavy and the protagonist was a picture perfect Gary Stu!

  3. Realms of My Mind says:

I’m fairly certain I read The Outlaws of Sherwood years ago in high school during a Robin McKinley phase where I pretty much bought everything she ever wrote. Seems like the one to keep out of the bunch!
