TBR Shelf Cleanup #5

Time for another round up of books from my TBR to go through! Each week I’ll be going over a selection from my physical unread books and deciding what to keep and what to purge. There will be a third option–undecided–which I might ask for your input on why you think I should keep or purge that title from my list. You can also check out my full TBR pile here.

Something from the Nightside by Simon R. Green

sftn-cover

John Taylor is not a private detective per se, but he has a knack for finding lost things. That’s why he’s been hired to descend into the Nightside, an otherworldly realm in the center of London where fantasy and reality share renting space and the sun never shines.

I picked this one up probably last year or the year before because one of my friends loves Simon R. Green and we have similar tastes. On the one hand, I’m always looking out for some new urban fantasy. On the other hand, do I really want to start another new urban fantasy series that has a ton of sequels? I have this and one of its sequel later in the series. UNDECIDED

Owlflight by Mercedes Lacky

owlflight-cover

Apprenticed to a venerable wizard when his hunter and trapper parents disappear into the forest never to be seen again, Darian is strong-willed and difficult–much to the dismay of his kindly master. But a sudden twist of fate will change his life forever, when the ransacking of his village forces him to flee into the great mystical forest. It is here in the dark forest that he meets his destiny, as the terrifying and mysterious Hawkbrothers lead him on the path to maturity. Now they must lead the assault on his besieged home in a desperate attempt to save his people from certain death!

Speaking of series with a ton of sequels. I have a TON of the Valdermar books and have not yet read any of them (although I have read a bunch of Lackey’s other work). For now I want to keep these since I have so many and it would be easy to binge but also I’m wondering what’s the best place to start with Valdemar? Is this series within Valdemar one of the good ones? (I’ve heard the quality goes down after a while…) KEEP–For Now

The Planet Pirates by Anne McCaffrey, Jody Lynn Nye, and Elizabeth Moon

tpp-coverTHE PLANET PIRATES ENSLAVED SASSINAK AND DESTROYED HER WORLD…A FATAL MISTAKE!The Planet Pirates traces the careers of two remarkable women. Sassinak escaped from slavery to freedom, and then used that freedom to fight the evil that had wrecked her world, first as a cadet, later as a captain, and finally as an Admiral of the Fleet.Lunzie, one of the galaxy’s greatest healers, is Sassinak’s great-grandmother — but in actual years she is her junior; Lunzie spent nearly a century in coldsleep waiting for rescue when her ship was destroyed. Imagine their mutual surprise when Sassinak rescued her.How together Sassinak and Lunzie save first a world, and then a confederation of worlds — and almost in passing establish amity between the genetically engineered Heavy Worlders and normal humanity — is the story of The Planet Pirates.

This is an omnibus edition of this trilogy and I can’t remember when or where I picked it up so my best guess is that it’s been in my TBR pile a good while. Meaning a few years probably. On the one hand I’d love to read more science fiction and I haven’t read a ton of Anne McCaffrey’s collaborative works, even though she collaborated a lot! On the other hand, I don’t know much about this one or how it might hold up. Has anyone read this one before? Let me know because I’m on the fence! UNDECIDED

The Hidden Dragon by Irene Radford

ts1-cover

Acclaimed author Irene Radford returns to her beloved Dragon Nibmus universe with book one of The Stargods. Here is the tale of the first Terrans, gifted with both psi powers and technology, who discovered a world where dragons are real…and are worshiped as gods

Back in the day the Dragon Nimbus series was my jam. I even wrote a post about it detailing how much I loved the series and the author. But I never got around to reading all of the other related series. Partly because there are a lot and partly because my attention was pulled to other authors and different kinds of books. I’d still like to complete this entire series one day and all its related series but I really don’t see myself getting to it anytime soon and since I only have book one of The Stargods, I’ll part with this one. PURGE

The Ill-Made Mute by Cecilia Dart-Thorton

timm-coverIn a thrilling debut that combines storytelling mastery with a treasure trove of folklore, Cecilia Dart-Thornton creates a lushly romantic epic adventure, set in a world brimming with wonders and terrors.

The Stormriders land their splendid winged stallions on the battlements of Isse Tower, while the scullions who dwell in the fortress’s lower depths rarely even see the sun. Yet it is the least of the lowly–a mute, scarred foundling youth–who dares to climb the Tower, stow away aboard a Windship, and dive from the sky into a wilderness of endless danger. For goblins, peskies, knocks, and all the eldrich wights of the Unseelie haunt every tree, every pool, every turn in the road, tormenting or killing unwary travelers. And unknown to the nameless one, somewhere a dark force is summoning the malignant hordes, determined to destroy the young mute’s identity, history…and destiny.

I’ve had this and its sequel on my shelves for a very long time. I think I may have read the first one or at least part of it, but it was so long ago I’ve forgotten it all to time so even if I’ve read it, it’s almost like a new book to me. Now, I do actually have ebooks of the entire Bitterbynde trilogy, but I think I’ll hang on to the physical copies because I really want to hold the book when I read this and also I love that cover. I think I’ll keep the ebook as supplemental and maybe for whenever I get to the last book in the trilogy since I only have the first two as physical copies. KEEP

A purge and a couple of undecideds this week! This brings my running total to:

Keep Purge Undecided

Knocking my TBR down a little bit more, slowly but surely. What are your thoughts on these? Leave a note in the comments, I’d love to chat!

I did a bit of purging myself this week – from my wishlist, things that had been on there for so long, realistically, I just know I’m never going to pick them up at this stage. You’ve obviously inspired me. Keepup the good work 😀

    • waytoofantasy says:

Hah, for some reason I never purge my wishlist, I think because I see the real problem area is my owned books right now, I think if I ever get this down I may move on to other book lists I have lol. Thanks! 🙂

    • waytoofantasy says:

I know that my friend really loves Simon Green’s books. I’m on the fence because I have so many other UF series already going on….. I’d say maybe check it out if you’re looking for something new to read though. 🙂

  2. PerfectlyTolerable says:

I haven’t read any of these so I can’t help with the undecideds based on the book themselves, but for me I find that if I’m on the fence I won’t ever actually read a book because there are always more books that I actually fully want to read.

Regarding Valdemar–our friend Amanda thinks it went downhill *with* the Darian’s Tale trilogy (Owlflight books), and I usually think it went downhill after that with the Collegium Chronicles books featuring Mags. I consider the Darian’s Tale books to be sort of an endcap/epilogue on the 15-ish book main arc in Valdemar. I have a recommended reading order, but I can send that to you offline. 😀

I think I did read at least one of the Planet Pirates books growing up, but it’s been so long. Maybe you should just purge it and give it to me. 😉

    • waytoofantasy says:

Ah, I see. Okay, just let me know. I probably have most of them because I have a lot that my friend gave me. Amanda did advise me of which to avoid this morning. 🙂

Yeah, I just think I’m probably not going to read the Planet Pirate books. You’re welcome to anything in my Purge list! Just let me know and I’ll set them aside for you for next time we meet up.
