TBR Shelf Cleanup #2

Time for another round up of books from my TBR to go through! Each week I’ll be going over a selection from my physical unread books and deciding what to keep and what to purge. There will be a third option–undecided–which I might ask for your input on why you think I should keep or purge that title from my list. You can also check out my full TBR pile here.

The Copper Crown by Patricia Kennealy-Morrison

When lore became legend on ancient Earth and the powers of magic waned, the Kelts and their allies fled the planet for the freedom of distant star realms.
But the stars were home to dangerous foes, and millenia later, the worlds of Keltia still maintained uneasy truce with two enemy empires -the Imperium and the Phalanx. Then, at the start of the reign of Aeron, mistress of high magic and queen of all the Kelts, an Earthship made contact with her long-fled children. And while Earth and Keltia reached out to form alliance, the star fleets of the enemy mobilized for final, devastating war….

I found the first three books of this series at a used book store and it demonstrates exactly why I love browsing used titles–I have never in all my time on SFF forums, twitter, other bookish places, ever heard of this book and it sounds so weird and interesting. Haven’t had a chance to read this one yet, obviously, but there’s no way I’m purging these from pile. KEEP

The Tower at Stony Wood by Patricia McKillip

ttosw-cover

She saw the knight in the mirror at sunset…
During the wedding festivities of his king, Cyan Dag, a knight of Gloinmere, is sought out by a mysterious bard and told a terrifying tale: that the king has married a false queen—a lie cloaked in ancient and powerful sorcery. Spurred on by his steadfast honor and loyalty, Cyan departs on a dangerous quest to rescue the real queen from her tower prison, to prevent war, and to awaken magic in a land that has lost its way…

I will absolutely not be getting rid of any of my Patricia McKillip books as I do have plans to read all of these eventually. Also, the covers are always so very lovely and they make my book shelves more interesting if nothing else. 🙂 I guess I should make it my goal to read at least one McKillip before the year is out though… KEEP

Fablehaven by Brandon Mull

fablehaven-coverFor centuries mystical creatures of all description were gathered into a hidden refuge called Fablehaven to prevent their extinction. The sanctuary survives today as one of the last strongholds of true magic. Enchanting? Absolutely. Exciting? You bet. Safe? Well, actually, quite the opposite.

Kendra and her brother, Seth, have no idea that their grandfather is the current caretaker of Fablehaven. Inside the gated woods, ancient laws keep relative order among greedy trolls, mischievous satyrs, plotting witches, spiteful imps, and jealous fairies. However, when the rules get broken — Seth is a bit too curious and reckless for his own good — powerful forces of evil are unleashed, and Kendra and her brother face the greatest challenge of their lives. To save their family, Fablehaven, and perhaps even the world, Kendra and Seth must find the courage to do what they fear most.

Honestly can not even remember what prompted me to buy this book. Was it a free one? Possibly. It does look like a fun book and it has a ton of ratings so it much be popular but…either way, I’m no longer interested. PURGE

The Book Collector by Alice Thompson

Alice Thompson’s new novel is a Gothic story of book collecting, mutilation and madness. Violet is obsessed with the books of fairy tales her husband acquires, but her growing delusions see her confined in an asylum. As she recovers and is released a terrifying series of events is unleashed.

This is one I picked up a few years ago, looking at recs on r/fantasy if I remember correctly. Although I could be wrong because it’s been a little while. This is a short one and I think the ‘gothic’ thing was a huge appeal. Since it’s short and shouldn’t be a long read I’m going to hang on to this one and hope I get through it eventually. KEEP

Chimera by Rob Thurman

chimera-cover

What makes us human? What makes us unique? And what makes us kill? Ten years ago, Stefan Korsak’s younger brother was kidnapped. Now a rising figure in the Russian mafia, Stefan has finally found Lukas. But Lukas is now a trained, genetically-altered killer who his creators want back. Saving Lukas may be easier than surviving him.

Used to be a HUGE fan of Rob Thurman back in the day and absolutely loved her Cal Leandros series of urban fantasy books. I bought everything else she wrote just because I wanted to support her work. Sadly, her series eventually got cancelled and I think she stopped writing after that. I haven’t ever read her other books that I purchased and I think I’ve moved on now, sadly. This and its sequel that are in my TBR, I think it’s time to part ways. PURGE

Once again, no undecideds this week. Any thoughts on these books, reasons I should change my mind or affirmations? Let me know in the comments, I’d love to chat!

I haven’t heard of any of these books aside from Fablehaven, and I know of at least McKillip.

I’d only say “be careful” about keeping books just because they’re short, that’s how you end up keeping a lot of stuff you still won’t read for another 20 years. 😀

I have a thought but it is because I like tallying things. Is there any way ye can keep a running total of how many books ye have kept and how many ye have purged at the bottom of these posts? I mean seriously ye don’t HAVE to do it if ye don’t want to. I would just be interested. I love these posts so.

PS I don’t know how anyone likes McKillips work but I LOVE her book covers.

I read Fablehaven couple years ago when I was still in college. I didn’t like it much; it was ok. Bought it because of the cover. I purged my copy too.

  4. HCNewton says:

(not to argue, but if you’re ever need a fun, MG fantasy as a palate-cleanser between heavy reads, find a version of Fablehaven at your library. It has a charm. But don’t hang on to it!)
