The orphaned Elsie Camden learned as a girl that there were two kinds of wizards in the world: those who pay for the power to cast spells and those, like her, born with the ability to break them. But as an unlicensed magic user, her gift is a crime. Commissioned by an underground group known as the Cowls, Elsie uses her spellbreaking to push back against the aristocrats and help the common man. She always did love the tale of Robin Hood.
Elite magic user Bacchus Kelsey is one elusive spell away from his mastership when he catches Elsie breaking an enchantment. To protect her secret, Elsie strikes a bargain. She’ll help Bacchus fix unruly spells around his estate if he doesn’t turn her in. Working together, Elsie’s trust in—and fondness for—the handsome stranger grows. So does her trepidation about the rise in the murders of wizards and the theft of the spellbooks their bodies leave behind.
For a rogue spellbreaker like Elsie, there’s so much to learn about her powers, her family, the intriguing Bacchus, and the untold dangers shadowing every step of a journey she’s destined to complete. But will she uncover the mystery before it’s too late to save everything she loves?
I’ve become a huge fan of Charlie N. Holmberg over the last few years ever since reading The Paper Magician. I really love her blend of fantasy and romance and I can’t wait to read this next book from her. Spellbreaker is expected September 8th, 2020 from 47North.
I think reading The Paper Magician was one of my ‘earlier’ forays into the fantasy genre when I picked up reading more again a few years ago. I loved it so much but I don’t know why I haven’t finished the rest of the books yet. This one sounds so good! Will definitely be adding to my TBR 😀
I loved that series and I’ve tried to read her stuff ever since and have enjoyed most of it. She writes so quickly it’s almost hard to keep up LOL!
I was just offered a review copy of this, and I’m very tempted to take it!
I had this post scheduled a while ago and just got the same offer, of course I took it because I’m such a huge fan and I don’t think this will impact my ‘mood’ reading (crossing my fingers). 🙂
ooh, this looks so cool!! i hope you end up enjoying this💜
Thanks, Kaya!
I just got pitched this one the other day, I had to accept because of the description!
It sounds really intriguing! I have high hopes. 🙂
This sounds so good – I hope (and think) you’ll love itl
Lynn 😀
Thanks, Lynn! I think I’ll love it too, it seems right up my alley. 🙂
I’m really looking forward to this one, too! I actually haven’t read The Paper Magician yet, but I want to read the whole series. I really enjoyed The Will and the Wild, though! So I definitely plan to read more of Holmberg’s work. 😀
I loved Paper Magician–became a huge fan of her work after that and I’m still trying to catch up with her backlist–she writes so quickly!
