The Jazz Age is in full swing, but Casiopea Tun is too busy cleaning the floors of her wealthy grandfather’s house to listen to any fast tunes. Nevertheless, she dreams of a life far from her dusty small town in southern Mexico. A life she can call her own.

Yet this new life seems as distant as the stars, until the day she finds a curious wooden box in her grandfather’s room. She opens it—and accidentally frees the spirit of the Mayan god of death, who requests her help in recovering his throne from his treacherous brother. Failure will mean Casiopea’s demise, but success could make her dreams come true.

In the company of the strangely alluring god and armed with her wits, Casiopea begins an adventure that will take her on a cross-country odyssey, from the jungles of Yucatán to the bright lights of Mexico City—and deep into the darkness of the Mayan underworld.

I have to admit, I knew I wanted to read this one as soon as I saw the gorgeous cover. Then reading the blurb it just seems so intriguing. We don’t get a lot of fantasy set during the period (although there are a few I can think of). Everything about this book feels so refreshing. Really looking forward to checking this one out! Gods of Jade and Shadow comes out August 6th from Del Rey.

Man, if that cover + title combo wasn’t enough already! Just added this to my Goodreads, so thank you for sharing!

You should totally check out her Certain Dark Things! It’s one of my favourite vampire books ever! She does such a great job of taking old premises and turning them on their heads. Or in this case, taking a completely new premise and making it a story out of it. Because I don’t think I’ve ever read a fantasy book about Mayan gods before!

Defo check out Certain Dark Things – I think you’ll love it. Which is why I’m so excited to read this one and see what she comes up with next.
Did you ever do a vampire bingo card btw?
    Lynn 😀

I’m definitely going to check it out. I never did a Vampire bingo card. I’m going to try to do the r/Fantasy bingo with all Vampire books, if I can. It should be interesting. Lol
