Can’t-Wait Wednesday: The City We Became by N.K. Jemisin

Can’t-Wait Wednesday, aka Waiting on Wednesday, is a weekly meme originating from Jill at Breaking the Spine and now hosted by Wishful Endings. If you’re interested in participating, stop by Wishful Endings to link up your posts.

tcwb-coverFive New Yorkers must come together in order to defend their city in the first book of a stunning new series by Hugo award-winning and NYT bestselling author N. K. Jemisin.

Every city has a soul. Some are as ancient as myths, and others are as new and destructive as children. New York City? She’s got five.

But every city also has a dark side. A roiling, ancient evil stirs beneath the earth, threatening to destroy the city and her five protectors unless they can come together and stop it once and for all.

At this point I think I’ll pretty much read anything Jemisin puts out, she’s just that great of a writer. This one looks especially good though and I’m really looking forward to it! I love stories that take a city and sort of make them a character and that looks like what Jemisin has done here so I’m excited for this one. The City We Became comes out March 26th, 2020 from Orbit.

This sounds good – I might try this, I’ve never caught up with her other series and have only read one book – which I really did enjoy, but once you get behind with things they start to feel insurmountable. This could be a whole new starting point

Yeah, I know what you mean. I made a point last year to read the two Broken Earth sequels–no regrets, they were great books. I still need to finish one of her other series I’ve started though… This one would be great for a fresh start, I think!

I agree. This book looks really good! I have yet to read anything N. K. Jemisin but everything by her ends up on my TBR. I hope this is one I will read (and I just put in a request for the eARC – fingers crossed!).

Yeah this is definitely the year I’ll read something by her. My excitement about her books has grown a lot this last year but I don’t seem to act on it. Yet. Thanks!

This is definitely on my watchlist! I kinda fell off her Broken Earth series, even though I was enjoying it…I think towards the end of the second book things got a bit too abstract and I never got around to picking up book 3. But her take on sci-fi could be interesting!

Agreed- Jemisin is a genius! I am really curious about this because the short story it was based on felt so experimental – and I ultimately had mixed feelings about it. I want to love it though.
