Favorite Five Sidekicks
Oh, look, another topic where there are way too many options to pick from! Sidekicks, besties, all of that….besides a romantic relationship, the bestie/sidekick is probably my favorite. These relationships are so much fun.
- Jean Tannen – The Gentleman Bastards by Scott Lynch
I think one of my favorite things about this book is the relationships between the characters, but in particular Jean and Locke.
- Samwise Gamgee – The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien
Samwise Gamgee is basically the perfect sidekick. He’s Frodo’s servant, but he’s really his best friend. If it wasn’t for Sam then their mission wouldn’t have been successful. Sam was always there for Frodo.
- Nighteyes – The Farseer Trilogy by Robin Hobb
Nighteyes is so much fun. He’s more of an animal companion but he’s probably also Fitz’s best friend. He’s also very opinionated and loves telling Fitz exactly what’s on his mind. But he’s got Fitz’s back for sure.
- Hermione Granger – Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling
I don’t know if I think of Hermione exactly as a sidekick but she is one of Harry’s best friends and she is an integral part of the group. Hermione was like the rock, strong and steady and holding things together. She’s also super smart and resourceful!
- Mogget – The Old Kingdom by Garth Nix
I know I just mentioned this series last week, but Mogget is such a great sidekick. He’s a bit of wild magic who spends most of his time in the form of a cat. And he’s exactly how you’d think a sentient cat would be, snark included. Oh, he is so very snarky.

Nighteyes is so cool. He made me laugh a lot during the third book, picking at Fitz lol.

I adore Samwise Gamgee so much. He is definitely the ultimate best friend and sidekick.
I really do think he’s the perfect embodiment of the sidekick/best friend. So loyal! So caring. So much quiet strength.

Choosing only five sidekicks would be so hard for me. I have to say I wholeheartedly agree with all of your choices, especially Sam! Sam is truly one of the best. These are all great, nice list!

Hah! Idk, I have a pretty strong crush on Jean myself. 😉 I still need to read the rest of the series that’s out. Did you see Bear and Lynch are GoH at next year’s Balticon? I may have to go this time.
