This Week in Reading: Post-Apocalyptic Urban Fantasy, Finishing up LitRPG, More Dresden, and Magic Powers

Well, I made progress, but I didn’t finish up all of my reads from last week (this is becoming a reoccurring theme here since summer started…). In part this is because of being able to do less audio-booking while at work, but also summer is just really busy!

I’m only about 50 pages into Trail of Lightning by Rebecca Roanhorse so far, but really enjoying it. I love the author’s voice and the worldbuilding so far has piqued my interest. What is this event, The Big Water? I need to know! I love the way the author just lets information out, as if we should already know about it, and then slowly sheds light on things. So far this is living up to my high expectations.

I’m a little more than halfway through the audiobook of Forever Fantasy Online by Rachel Aaron and Travis Bach. I feel like if you liked Rachel Aaron’s Heartstrikers series, you’ll like this one too, as the character dynamics feel very similar. I’m also getting quite a kick out of the whole ‘trapped in a game’ thing as this is totally giving me nostalgia from my WoW days, banging around Stormwind as a paladin. The only thing is, I didn’t realize how long this audiobook was (19 hours!) and it’s taking me a lot longer to get through. Whoops!

Because it’s taking me longer to get through Forever Fantasy Online, I’m going to have to put Valour and Vanity on hold for a bit because my hold from the library auto checked out. So looks like I’ll be listening to Dead Beat by Jim Butcher next! This is number 7 of the Dresden Files. I’m really working my way through that series. I’m determined to catch up by the end of the year, as long as I still have time to experience other books in between volumes I think I’ll be fine. 😀

After I get through Trail of Lightning I’m going to be reading Star Touched by A. L. Kaplan. I’ve had this book in my TBR pile since last September when I met the author at the Baltimore Book Festival and picked up a copy there. This is a story about a girl with powers that’s persecuted for them. I’m really looking forward to this one and I’m only sorry it’s taken me so long to finally get a chance to read it. (My TBR pile is out of control!)

Also, don’t forget I’m still working my way through Kushiel’s Dart by Jacqueline Carey for the read along on reddit’s r/fantasy forum. We’re about 1/3rd of the way through so there’s still time to catch up if you want to read along with us!

What is everyone else reading this week? Leave a message in the comments, I’d love to hear from you!

  1. Tammy says:

I just started Trail of Lightning yesterday and love it! The world building is so cool and I love that Maggie drives an old truck😁

  2. Kathy @Pages Below the Vaulted Sky says:

The narrative voice for Trail of Lightning is pretty great, isn’t it? 😀 Looks like you have an awesome roster this week! I’m currently going through Nicky Drayden’s Temper. The “magic system” is built around the seven deadly sins and virtues, which is super cool!
