This Week in Reading: Dragons with Heart, Fitz, and Time Wrinkles

Well, I’m finally doing it–I’m finally going to finish the Farseer Trilogy. I read the first book in this series by Robin Hobb in 2014 and the second one the following year. I’ve been meaning to read Assassin’s Quest ever since but just haven’t gotten around to it for various reasons. Ok, really one reason if I’m being completely honest with myself.

15202526836461459731156I’ve had a lot of people recommend this series to me over the years and while I can appreciate it, there are just so many things about it that have made me put it off for so long. The first book was a tedious read for me but had such an exciting edge-of-your-seat ending that really made me want to keep reading. The second book, however….well, that almost got thrown across the room. A few times. The characters, despite any power they might have (like being in charge of a kingdom or being an assassin) windmill about helplessly when faced with an internal (mustache twirling) enemy. When it would be so incredibly easy for them to take even a small action against them, they essentially do nothing except spend a lot of time agonizing about ‘what can we do??? oh nooooo!’. No. Stfu, there is tons you could do, please stop with this bs. *chucks book across the room* Perhaps the writing is just a tad too true to life for me. Yes, it is easier to bitch and whine about things than take action.

So, yeah, it has taken me a long time to get over that (and obviously I am still not over that) so that I can dive into the third book. I have made a commitment to finish series this year and, dammit, I am sticking to that commitment. Plus, I really want to read Liveship Traders and also the Fool books (because The Fool is probably my favorite character in all of this). Anyway, Assassin’s Quest will probably take me a while to get through, I expect at least a week, hopefully not more than that.

Meanwhile over in audiobook world, I’m listening to Last Dragon Standing by Rachel Aaron, which was just released on March 1st. This is the last book to her Heartstrikers series and I have to say I’m taking my time with this one because I don’t want to say good-bye to these characters. I’m a little less than halfway through and so far there has been a lot of standing around discussing things, but I guess that’s to be expected as it was no small amount of machinations that have brought us to where we currently are in the series. Also, a literal world-eating leviathan is hanging in the sky threatening the end of times, so that’s going to have to be dealt with soon and that should be fun. Go team!

After I finish up Last Dragon Standing I have A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle lined up in my listening queue. I have not read the Time Quintet since I was in middle school and that was something like twenty-eight years ago and holy shit I am old. Anywho, clearly due for a re-read since the movie is coming out. Also, this is the book that was picked as the next read for a book club I run and since we’ll be meeting next month for our tea party and book discussion, I should probably make it a priority to read.

So, that should be my reading for this week, unless a miracle happens and I finish Assassin’s Quest ahead of schedule and start something new. Never know, crazier things have happened!
